Saying goodbye to Hong Kong
Imagine reading the best book ever and knowing that it is coming to a close, but desperately not wanting it to end. Even though ‘Japan’ is the next book and I am very excited about starting it.
We lived in Hong Kong for nearly three and a half years and it has been fabulous. It is such an easy place to live with so much English spoken and so safe and easy to travel. I was worried about giving up work and becoming a ‘lady who lunches’ but I have been blessed with making so many good friends from all around the world, experiencing Hong Kong festivals and customs, doing some volunteering and travelling around Asia. What’s not to like?!!
It is with a sad heart that we say ‘bye to Hong Kong, and whilst I have shared many photos from Hong Kong, I thought I would leave you with a few more
Public transport is so good in Hong Kong – cheap, clean and extremely plentiful.
Star Ferry Inside an MTR …. very empty because people were working from home And the famous trams
I will always remember Hong Kong for it’s incredible bamboo scaffolding … three and a half years later and I still gaze at it in wonderment!
One I found from early days – outside our 56th floor apartment! A recent street scene Not quite as beautiful when covered in safety netting!
I have tried to shop locally in independent shops and have built up recognition and a sort of friendship with their staff. Those who speak English have been wonderful sources of information and with others I have been able to share smiles & visual jokes. I did try to learn Cantonese but it is so so tough … there are nine tones and my hearing is not good.
I end with a photo of me with this fabulous tiny lady who comes into our building to collect waste in a wheelie bin from two restaurants. I often shared the lift with her and we jabbered away to each other … clueless as to what the other was saying. But I saw her on our penultimate evening and she called me ‘friend’. I feel sad that I was unable to explain that we were moving away.
