Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island

A short boat ride from Hiroshima, is Miyajima, the Island of Shrines, with World Heritage status. It is famous for it’s large red torii rising out of the sea in front of the shrine. Unfortunately for us, it is undergoing renovation and is totally covered!

But the Itsukushima Shrine is also fascinating as it is built on stilts and the tide comes in underneath it.

When you arrive on the island, you immediately run into scabby deer looking to scavenge food … makes a change from monkeys.

Cable Cars to Mount Misen

It is possible to walk up Mount Misen, but it’s 530 m up through a forest. We took the lazy way up on two cable cars.

  1. Andrew is always saying more buildings here in the UK should be built on stilts to avoid flooding. Seems obvious really …

    1. I agree with Andrew … and it would be exciting to see water flow underneath on an occasional basis x
