Holiday Weekend

Holiday Weekend

We enjoyed a long weekend with public holidays for the Mid Autumn Festival (a little like our harvest festival) on October 1st & 2nd. This is a family time with people eating together, displaying and burning paper lanterns and handing over gifts of Moon Cakes. These are sweet, dense pastry pies that are greatly appreciated …. but not by my taste buds! Unfortunately larger public displays of fire dragon dancing and other events were cancelled this year.

I prefer the tin to the Moon Cakes

We took the opportunity to get out and about and decided to take a trip to one of Hong Kong’s many islands – there are over 260 larger than 500 sq metres. We went to Peng Chau, situated due south of Mui Wo, climbed the highest point Finger Hill, just over 300 feet above sea level and generally mooched around the island.

I love including photographs that demonstrate Hong Kong is not all high rises … indeed less than 25% of it’s land is built upon. The photograph on top right is a trig point. On the bottom row are fish air drying and incense coils hanging from the ceiling in one of the many temples on the island.
