Seaside Trip

Seaside Trip

Only an hour from Tokyo, but a different world. Kita-Kamakura is a tiny station with only one line …. and you cross this line on foot after the train has left.

All good walks start with coffee & cake …. home made scones (how English!) served with cream and jam and accompanied by a drip coffee. Old coffee hessian sacks make great planters.

And then straight onto a large temple complex; the Engaku-ji which is one on the leading Zen temples in Japan.

Many buildings, dating from 1783 with more recent rebuilds after some were destroyed by earthquake, over a large area.

Temple viewing is hungry work, so lunch of sautéed pork with olive sauce, steamed fish with butter & soy sauce, green salad and rolled barley white rice (menu with English translation!)

And then the walk … great concentration on looking where you put your feet!

Until we reached the Great Buddha of Kamakura. At 11.4 m high, it is the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan. Although originally located in side a temple, since 15th century, this Buddha has been in open air.

A short walk later we reached the sea –
