Takaosan (Mount Takao)
Sssshhh … we decided to escape the city on Saturday, but decided that since Mount Takao is located within metropolitan Tokyo it would be OK. Only 50 minutes by train & then the slog to the 599 metre summit. Freedom!
Mount Takao is a sacred mountain with many temples and shrines to visit as you progress the steep slopes. Many people visit this mountain to pray to Shinto-Buddhist mountain gods for good fortune.
We walked up on tarmacked paths but most of the way down on the nature trail … so lovely to feel soil under your feet but you have to be careful (me in particular!) not to trip over the protruding roots.
And we were rewarded with this spectacular view of Mount Fuji, some 60 km away. Wow!!!
This photograph of a Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel (who knew such an animal existed!) was taken at the Takao 599 Museum. Their bodies range from 28-35 cm plus their tails of 34-63 cm. Fortunately they are nocturnal … if I had seen one I am sure you would have heard my screams as I ran down the mountain.

Thanks Claire. Considering the massive size of Tokyo, I have been amazed that we have so many blue skies. Long may it continue! x
