Fukubukuro

Lucky Bags! Fuko means luck & fukuro means bag. This ia a Japanese New Year custom where retailers make up bags of goods, usually old stock, and sell them at a discount. These are hugely popular and in some stores people queue to buy their bags.

Luck Bags are themed by category – beauty, fashion, toys etc, with the contents a surprise until after your purchase, although some shops are revealing the contents in advance so that customers are not disappointed.

Sssh, don’t tell Geoff, but I couldn’t resist – I decided to ‘invest’ in a coffee lucky bag. Surely, I couldn’t go wrong! So I handed over my 6,000 JPY (£43, 430HK$) & the salesman at the till was so excited as he pulled out the contents to show me …

A little fleecy rug for knees, a metal coffee mug (with lid), a bag, various coffee and 8 drinks vouchers …. surely he won’t complain!

A small request ..

    1. Hello Hong Kong … and you two! I’m delighted to report that we have great heating as well as carpets so the cold isn’t a problem. It is difficult to meet anyone these days but at least I have a massive city to explore. Love to you both from both of us xx
