Mui Wo

Mui Wo

Somehow we managed to live in Hong Kong for three years but failed to visit Mui Wo, an oversight that we corrected at the weekend. Unfortunately we chose a time when our French friend & resident of Mui Wo was away. Sorry Isobel.

Mui Wo, on the eastern coast of Lantau Island, is a traditional rural town of around 5,000 people. It was unusually quiet when we visited, no doubt because the beach is closed (all public beaches in HK are currently closed) and the lack of tourists. On a positive note, that meant no queues, or people hogging those instagrammable spots!

It was once an area where silver was mined …. hence Silvermine Bay, Silvermine Beach Resort, the Silver River etc. Man Mo Temple was set up some 400 years ago with the key purpose of settling disputes between miners. I wish I had had a ringside seat for some of those arguments.

In estate agent parlance I think this place is ripe for development!
Yes, an old lavatory … fortunately not in current use!

Mui Wo is famous for its roaming water buffalo and cows …. but they were in hiding when we were there!

We also missed out on blue skies …. nearly every day is overcast, polluted and at times rainy. But it is still 30 degrees; I would welcome some cooler days.

I will end my short write up on Mui Wo with one last photograph – I love it. No messing around trying to think of imaginative road names!
